The
grid-tie inverter is designed to create clean 480 volt 3 phase power
with unity power factor - voltage and Current are in phase. The
power produced meets IEEE 519 specifications, less than 3% Total
Harmonic Distortion (THD).
We insert the grid-tie inverter
between the wind turbine's induction generator and the in-feed lines
(see Figure 1 below). This provides complete isolation of the induction
load (generator) from the grid eliminating surge currents that can
bring the grid down.

Additionally,
this design affords us the ability to bring the turbine online in a
controlled, ramp-up-to-speed fashion, at which time the wind turbine
automatically switches into the energy producing mode (generation).
Note the increased range of power generation. Clean power
at 60Hz is generated throughout the entire range of wind speeds.
This
modification to your existing induction generator based wind turbine
results in clean, usable power with no capacitor banks or filtering
required.
Additional options are available, SCADA compatible
controls, 3 to 15 inch Human Machine Interface (HMI - see Figure 2
below), Schweitzer relay for grid power monitoring (see Figure 3
below), as well as battery and ultra-capacitor bank storage available
for ride-thru capabilities.

Sizes available up to 2MW for an induction generator.
With
the grid-tie inverter, a new controller will be provided for control of
the wind turbine, the standard model is a Siemens S1200 platform (see
Figure 4 below). This controller initiates pitch, yaw and brake
adjustments as well as a controlled shut-down (e.g., during high winds)
based on weather instrumentation and grid status input.
